Warm Earthy Contemporary
Sarjapur Road, Bengaluru • 2024
Terracotta House took its design cue from the landscape immediately outside — the red laterite earth, copper-toned sunsets, and aged timber of the surrounding area. The brief was to build something that felt rooted and regional, without sacrificing the ease of a contemporary home.
Renova Studio worked through an extensive material research phase before settling on a palette of warm terracotta plaster, aged teak joinery, raw sienna linen, and matte black ironwork. Each material was chosen to improve with age and patina rather than demand constant upkeep.
The double-height entrance hall sets the tone: a sculptural staircase in teak and blackened metal rises through the space, framed by a bespoke brass pendant fixture. From there, every room connects back to the warm earthy palette, with natural ventilation and a central courtyard keeping the home cool and light through the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does an earthy palette translate into a modern home?
Modern detailing — clean lines, considered proportions, and restrained ornamentation — elevates natural, earthy materials into contemporary interiors. The warmth of terracotta and teak reads as sophisticated when used with discipline and paired with quality hardware.
Are natural plasters and raw finishes difficult to maintain in Bangalore?
Lime and clay-based plasters are breathable and well-suited to Bangalore's mixed climate. They are sealed for durability and given a maintenance guide at handover; most only need occasional re-sealing every few years.
Did you coordinate the central courtyard as part of the project?
Yes — the courtyard was designed in parallel with the interiors to ensure the material palette and planting carried through from inside to outside. We coordinated with a landscape consultant to select species and hardscaping that complemented the home.
What made aged teak the right choice over newer engineered woods?
Aged teak carries a natural patina and grain character that engineered alternatives cannot replicate. It is also extremely durable and dimensionally stable in Indian conditions, making it a long-term investment for joinery and furniture.
